What is Protein?
Proteins are essential nutrients for the human body. They are one of the building blocks of body tissue, and can also serve as a fuel source. As a fuel, proteins contain 4 kcal per gram, the same as carbohydrates but different to fats that contain 9 kcal per gram. Protein is made up of Amino Acids. These are often referred to as the building blocks of protein. There are 22 amino acids of which 9 are classed as essential which means our body can’t produce them therefore they need to be obtained through foods. Foods that contain all 9 essential amino acids (known as complete proteins) are the best protein sources to eat.
Why is protein important?
Protein makes up part of the structure of every cell in your body, including your internal organs, tendons, skin, muscle tissue, hair and nails. Protein is needed for the growth and formation of new tissues, tissue repair and can be used as a fuel for energy production. Protein also plays a main role in maintaining optimal fluid balance in tissues, transporting nutrients in and out of cells, carrying oxygen and regulating blood clotting.
Chia Seed and Protein
Chia is loaded with protein, containing 15-24% by volume.
Chia crops vary in protein content based on the individual characteristics of each crop, the nutrients in the soil and the weather conditions during the growing season.
Our hair and nails are mostly made out of protein so they are the first to show obvious signs of improvement within a relatively short space of time of taking Chia.
What is even more important is that Chia’s is a complete protein. Plant protein is often missing one or more of the essential amino acids; this means your body needs to find the missing amino acids from other consumed foods in order to utilise the protein within the body.“Chia seed is one of only a few seeds that is classed as a complete protein.”
